The project is a community of like-minded artists and partners which includes Tiny Drops, SlumGods, the Wall Project, DJ Uri and Sound Curry. The idea is to create a culture of hip hop in the country which is democratic, inclusive and sustainable in the long run.

Together, they have successfully run and executed several projects in the past two years. With Tiny Drops, SlumGods and Roc Fresh crew they have participated in and organized community bboy jams and workshops in Delhi and Bombay (at Battle Fort Dharavi, Celebrate Bandra festival, Youdh Bboy Championships, Danceworx Academy, Pali Naka). Their music projects with DJ Uri and Sound Curry have included the tour of Marc Hype and Jim Dunloop with workshops and gigs at Bonobo, Cool Chef Café and Blue Frog in Bombay, Circa 1191, TLR Cafe, Out of the Box in Delhi, college festivals like Mood Indigo at IIT Powai, IIT Warangal, and more. With the Wall Project, they have painted murals inside the BMC office in Dadar, walls on Chapel Road and Mount Mary in Bandra, in Dharavi, and several more. The highlight of the graffiti projects was the painting of the walls of the German Embassy in Delhi on the occasion of the German Year in India, which the current Hip Hop & Urban Culture Week is also part of.

AKIM WALTA / ZEB.ROC.SKI / ZEBSTER BIO

Over the past two decades, Akim Walta has built and contributed to the community of music, dance, graffiti, book and music publishing as well as organising workshops and lecturing across the world. For instance, Walta was a guest speaker at the first Red Bull Music Academy Workshop, where he discussed his work with setting up MZEE Records, the first German hip hop music label.

MZEE Records, established in 1992, has over 100 releases of German rap, instrumental hip hop focused on b-boy tracks and several classics. His own music has always focused on promoting hip hop culture as a movement in the mainstream world: some music clips produced by him have run on heavy rotation on European channels like Viva, MTV, etc.

His b-boy alias ZEB.ROC.SKI and ZEBSTER (graffiti alias) are instantly recognisable key words in the world of hip hop and pop culture. Walta is also the author of the critically acclaimed and classic volume Hip Hop Files.

Today, Walta runs his own venture called Hip Hop Stutzpunkt, to promote hip hop culture in Berlin and has extended his work beyond the boundaries of the European Union. His last project in China from 2008-2010 successfully created an exchange and network of hip hop artists between Germany and China.

DJ URI BIO

With solid roots both in the UK & Indian DJ/Nightlife & Social scene, DJ Uri has been mixing it up around India for the last 17 years. That has led him to a point where he believes that the Indian public demand more choices and variety of music and culture, than what is currently being provided. With the lack of Vinyl DJ’s within the Indian DJ circuit, that real essence of Hip-Hop DJs and MCs is truly missing from what is fast becoming the world’s largest clubbing community. This art form is something that DJ Uri is passionate about introducing to the DJ scene. He believes everyone should to take more of an interest in the history of music and where and how it all came about.

The past year Uri has been putting on his own events in Mumbai, promoting and playing 70’s Funk, Soul and Old Skool Hip-Hop nights. As one half of KAZURI hosting “IMAGINE” & “RECYCLED”, nights paying homage to classic and original songs, and has recently put on a night at Zenzi/Mumbai, “BLACK SOUL” dedicated to legendary soul labels Motown, Stax & Chess Soul.

ROC FRESH CREW BIO

Roc Fresh Crew was founded on December 15, 2009 by breakdancers Simon, Bunny, AmB, Wasim, Gani & Example. Bboys Ninja, Kid & Abdul joined the Crew a year later. Unified, they form a legendary force flaunting style, skill, grace and power. Roc Fresh is a pioneer in India’s Hip Hop scene, modeling strong leadership, commitment, and unity for rising breakers, and organizing events that promote Dance alongside DJing, MCing and Graffiti, for an authentic communication of Hip Hop culture.

Championship winners of countless Crew, Solo, Footwork and Power Moves battles, Roc Fresh has left an impact across India and abroad. Notable performances include: the launch of Ed Hardy, Delhi; the Auto Expo 2008 for Yamaha Motors; E.A. Sports sponsored Vexture National Gaming Competition, 2008; MTV’s CrazySexyCool.com; the Red Bull Street Style Soccer Competition Finals, 2008; Bandra Festival 2009 with NYC’s DJ Rekha; India’s Got Talent, 2009; Gold’s Gym, 2010; Pogo Mad Carnival, 2009; MTV Stunt Mania Auditions (5 city tour), 2010; and for Hip Hop nights at major clubs.

The Crew has also been featured in music videos including Punjabi MC’s Morni Jan, 2011; Juggy D’s Ni Soniye; Disney’s The Cheetah Girls: One World; Shamur’s Rock Your Body; Star One’s Chak De Funjabi; Disney’s We Rock (Camp Rock); and in Bollywood movies Aloo Chat and What’s Your Raashee, 2009.

Roc Fresh provides mentorship and conducts workshops with NGOs such as Tiny Drops Hip Hop Collective, and in Colleges across Mumbai such as St. Xaviers, Mithibhai, MMK, and Sophia. It has organized events in Mumbai clubs and across India with Cypherholics BBoy Summit. The Crew is represented globally by SlumGods Hip Hop Collective.

SHIRO BIO

Shiro began painting in 1998 in Shizuoka, Japan. She has been expressing her own vision of the world and for life through her original characters. She decided to stay in NY and develop her talent as a graffiti artist. From 2002 to 2004, she lived in Brooklyn and Queens NY. As an international artist, she continues to be inspired by the strength and creativity of old-school hip-hop.

In Japan, Shiro has worked with many people in the hip-hop industry, organizing graffiti shows and participating in painting events. She loves traveling, painting, making friends and leaving footsteps of her existence all over the world. She has participated in community awareness murals and other large-scale graffiti projects, also in gallery art shows and been a part of graffiti crew gatherings in USA, Europe, and Japan.

She also has worked on canvases, illustrations, graphics design, and has produced her original clothing brand “BJ46″.

In addition to her accomplished career as an artist, she works as a nurse and witness a lot of suffering and drama. The experiences from the medical field changed her prospective on life and she wanna express her message through her artwork:
“Love life and live it to the max! We exists RIGHT NOW, RIGHT HERE!”

Direction: Pino Di Buduo
With: Nathalie Mentha

Venue: Satyajit Ray Auditorium – ICCR Kolkata
Date and time: Tuesday 20 March 2012, 6:30 PM onwards

The performance is a musical journey in the France of the Thirties and Fifties through Edith Piaf’s songs. Stories of lives in the environment of the French gangsters, stories of women in love, stories of passions, of dreams, of memories. It is the tale of a period, 1939, a historical moment highly alive through all Europe. It is the period of Jacques Prévert’s poetry, of Cartier-Bresson’s photography, of Jean Cocteau’s theatre tales, of the coming of the Second World War which destroys so many families, of the songs for Charlie Chaplin’s films, of the images of the characters of De Sica’s film “Roma Città Aperta”, of the Frech Resistance, of the struggle for life, for love. The performance theme, the soul which ties the stories, and maybe more Edith Piaf’s soul seems to be: “don’t ever stop believing in love, whatever happens”.

PERFORMANCES: Salvador de Bahia; Rieti; Fara Sabina (RI); Abbiategrasso (MI); Bari; Bergamo; Roma; Caserta.

NATHALIE MENTHA

Nathalie Mentha was born in Geneva . After completing school, she joined the Theatre School of the Swiss Clown Dimitri. From 1979 Nathalie Mentha lives in Italy and works with the Potlach Theatre. She has worked in the productions like “The Dry Tree’s Dances”, “Pearls Fishermen”, “Before the Fest is over” , “Sailors’ Dreams” , “Joan of the Spirits”, “Opera Tango’s Emigrants”, “The Conductors”, “Images Parade”, “Turandot”, “Shakespeare Project”, “Mediterranean Myths”, “Imaginary Ambassadors”, “Felliniana”, “Viva la Vita”, “To Edith Piaf”, “Hotel Europa”, “20.000 Leagues under the seas”. With the Potlach Theater Nathalie Mentha also works as a pedagogue in schools and universities and has synthesised her experience in two work demonstrations: Memories, Sand Tales. She conducts workshops on Voice and Space, Fights of Clowns, Street Theater, Marco Polo project.

Since 1991 she has been participating in the conception and organisation of INVISIBLE CITIES (Intercultural and interdisciplinary project with local associations and professional artists from every part of the world) directed by Pino Di Buduo .

The exhibition will then be on display at Tejas Gallery, 11 Mayfair Road from 27th Feb to 10th Mar 2012, 12.30 pm to 7.30 pm daily except Sundays.

“JOURNEYS” reflects the artist’s more contemplative side – the works take the viewer down village roads, through Bengal countryside, across the water in village boats, to the ghats – the end of all journeys.

Born in 1975, SAMBHU SAHA belongs to the rare breed of young, contemporary Indian Impressionist painters.

Sambhu drew his inspiration from the legendary Gopal Ghosh, who worked with water-colours as well as mixed mediums, never following the Western academic style. Instead, his inspiration was classical Chinese in the rendering of brushwork, and Western Impressionism, in the application of colour.

Sambhu too uses relatively small, thin, yet visible brush strokes and open compositions, with an emphasis on the accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities.

The Impressionist style of painting, popularized by artists like Manet, Monet and Renoir, rejects the use of colours in a grammatical manner. There is instead a concentration on the general impression produced by a scene, and the use of unmixed primary colors and small strokes to simulate actual reflected light.

In Shambhu’s work one sees that freely brushed colours are given primacy over line. He uses short thick strokes to quickly re-create the sensation rather than re-creating the subject and its details. Paint is often applied impasto, unmixed. His more contemplative work has darker tones, while his village and ghat scenes are done with small strokes of colour, placed side by side to produce the effect of light. Wet paint is placed into wet paint without waiting for successive applications to dry, producing softer edges and an intermingling of colour….but the optical mixing of colours occurs in the eye of the viewer.

Shambu often paints in the outdoors to capture the transient effects of sunlight or the shadowy effects of twilight. Like photographers, he is inspired to capture the moment. But his art goes a step further… it has a subjectivity that photography cannot include. His paintings are his ‘perceptions’ – and this allows him to exploit his unique style of painting.

These musicians from around the world will perform Anusheh’s own compositions, as well as baul songs by Lalon Shai and other mystic poets. Bahok’s performances tap into the ecstatic joy of questioning one’s life and searching for truth through music.

Anusheh

Anusheh Anadil is an iconoclast and role model par excellence. She is the lead vocalist of Bangla, one of Bangladesh’s leading bands. Anusheh’s deep vocals have made her a favourite of many leading musicians across the globe. She has collaborated with legends such as Swedish bassist Jonas Hellborg, featured in Susheela Raman’s Music for Crocodiles, recorded a song for Abhik Mukhopadhay’s film Bhoomi with the band Indian Ocean (pioneers of the fusion rock genre in India), and worked with percussionist Pandit Tanmoy Bose on the project, Baul and Beyond. She won The Musical Journalist’s Award in 2006 by Bangladesh Music Journalists Association and in 2007, she was conferred the Annanya Sreshtho 10 Nari (Top 10 women of Bangladesh) for raising her voice against religious intolerance through music. She was also selected as one of the two recipients of the first Meeto Memorial Award for Young South Asians (2009), which honours those whose work demonstrates a commitment to communal harmony, peace, justice, and human rights. Link TV (a non-commercial American satellite television network providing “diverse perspectives on world and national issues”) celebrated new voices of musicians and artistes from the Muslim world by making documentaries on young creative people, Anusheh being one of them

Seth Panduranga Blumberg

Seth Panduranga Blumberg, the “God of Jazz Blues”, felt the tug of music and its intricate linkage to the path of spirituality when he met Ike Turner (referred to as a ‘great innovator’ of Rock and Roll) and Ravi Shankar. Inspired by the mystical music of Sufi, he now spends most of his time in South Asia. More recently, he has been working in Kolkata with tabla maestro Tanmoy Bose, and the path breaking new band, Kendraka.

For Anadil and Blumberg, music is one route to going beyond differences and reconnecting on a pure level with humanity. Anadil’s grandmother has been a leading advocate of mental health and human rights in Bangladesh, and for Blumberg, music has the inherent ability to heal. Both care deeply about social change issues, which is why they have agreed to come together to contribute to Anjali’s mammoth task of spearheading a change in how mental health and human rights is viewed and dealt with in the country.

Jesse Charnow

Jesse Charnow is a drummer and percussionist. He has studied and played with Ravi Shankar, Anoushka Shankar, the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, the California Symphony Orchestra and Rock legend Ike Turner. His performances cover a broad spectrum of music, including, classical symphonic works, jazz, world fusion, blues, funk and rock.

Mainak Bumpy Nag Chowdhury

Mainak Bumpy Nag Chowdhury plays the Bass. He is an integral member of Pandit Tanmoy Bose’s band TaalTantra. He has played and recorded with Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya, Pandit Chitresh Das and many other Indian classical luminaries. His own band, Kendraka is a unique blend of his diverse musical background, which includes latin jazz, indian classical and progressive rock.

Nozrul Islam

Nozrul Islam is one of the most popular dhol players of Bangladesh. His famous quote when asked about his feeling about playing at a concert in Germany with 1 million ‘Once I have my Dhol and start playing it, I don’t ever feel like I have left my country’. He has played with Baul legends like Shah Abdul Karim, Kangalini Sufia etc and travelled extensively across the globe with his band Bangla and with other musicians.

Slow Joe and the Ginger Accident is the encounter of an old street singer known by the Times of India as “Cinderella Man” and a soul-blues quartet of young French musicians.

Joe, 68, comes from an island off the coast of Goa, India. He lives and sleeps with the sun, taking life as it comes. People call him Slow Joe. Everyday, Slow Joe sings improvised or written songs of his own. In July 2007, fate has it that he meets paths with Cédric de la Chapelle, a young French musician. Cédric is instantly charmed by the genuine blues of Slow Joe’s voice and has him do some a cappella recordings. Back in France, he forms the soul-blues quartet The Ginger Accident with his friends, in order to write the music stemming from Slow Joe’s voice.

In 2009 Slow Joe & the Ginger Accident meet for the first time in life and on stage, at the Transmusicales Festival in Rennes, where they are unanimously dubbed the revelation of the prized French festival by media like Le Monde, Times of India, Libération, ARTE, France 24,…

Slow Joe, charmed his french audience in March 2010 during two sold-out gigs (Epicerie Moderne/Lyon and Café de la Danse/Paris).

CDR is a burntprogress project, the bedrock for aspiring and established producers to submit their current works in progress which are then play-listed and heard on a great sound system on that same night. An opportunity for like-minded artists to meet and exchange feedback/ideas and tracks, in turn assisting the development of electronic artists and producers in India.

Having started in London’s premier nigthclub Plastic People, being the weekly soundtrack to London’s empire of upcoming musicians, CDR is now looking to develop a tribe of producers in each city who aspire to make a career out of producing original music.

“We aim to inspire enough people to do this by being catalysts for such a movement.” – Tony Nwachukwu, CDR Founder

Through a cultural initiative supported by the British Council, CDR will later this year host workshops and events in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkata, introducing the concept of hearing music during the construction stage, rather than the final product.

“India is a Bollywood dominated market. Teenagers and youth across the country aspiring to do anything non-mainstream find themselves with limited access to resources/avenues that will give them the exposure they deserve. Within this niche, electronic music acts find themselves cornered even further between an arts, culture and Indie music scene.”

Workshops from seasoned professionals and promising UK talent nurtured through the UK CDR scene will feature workflow production presentations and recording tutorial sessions using live session musicians and established vocalists from the scene.

Material (stems) from the recordings made during these sessions will also be made available to members of the CDR community in India and the UK as a source of sampling and further manipulation. These reworks will contribute to the building of a music catalogue celebrating this project.

The best material submitted during the CDR events in India will be released on a CDR India compilation that will be available digitally through iTunes. The submitted material will also be spread through the online CDR community to the UK and beyond. Podcasts and film documentation will also be produced during the project.

Anyone keen on listening to new electronic music can participate:

Producers are invited to arrive on the night with a current work in progress burned to a CD or uploaded to their dedicated Soundcloud Dropbox. Tracks submitted should include the following information:

Artist Name
Track Number
Track Title
URL (facebook / twitter / soundcloud)

All submitted tracks are kept for CDR archival purposes and may be played at additional sessions and online platforms.
