World Music Day (also known as Fête de la Musique) is a connected set of free public events which takes place each year on 21st June, on the summer solstice. Last year there were events in 108 countries and 726 cities around the world, not including France where there were too many events to count!
World Music Day originated in France in 1982. It has now spread across the globe with each event holding to the same simple set of principles: that the day is held on the summer solstice and that all concerts and events are free and accessible to the public.
Typically this means that any venue can have musicians playing there.
Every year, l’Alliance française du Bengale promotes and celebrates music on Fête de la Musique/World Music Day.
- This year a weeklong programme started with French Violinist Guillaume Blanc who performed at ICCR at the YUVA Music Festival, organised by the Academy for Musical Excellence with mentors like Usha Uthup, Priscilla Corner and Ujjanini Mukherjee performing along with the students and professors.
- We want music for all and have reached out this year to underprivileged children of Kolkata, with workshops and concerts for eight NGOs at 3 venues.
- Alliance has brought together 30 bands at different venues like malls, restaurants, bookstores, libraries, clubs and nightclubs.
- Under the umbrella of World Music Day, there are concerts all over the city
